The ordinary announcement for admission to the PhD Schools of the University of Padova has been published on September 6th 2011, with deadline October 6th, 2011.
The PhD School in Statistical Sciences has 9 positions available, among whom 1 scholarship, supported by "Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo" with the above mandatory thesis topic and supervised by me. Applicants wishing to apply for this scholarship must select the research topic in the application form and attach a research project (otherwise the special topic application will not be considered). To assist applicants to develop their own research project, a (very rough) draft (.doc, .pdf) is available upon request. It includes a short description of the biomedical background and a list of references for the methodological and computational part. Statistical methods and models for integrating genomic and functional data
"La poca familiarità con la statistica porta a confondere la probabilità con l’imprecisione. Al contrario, probabilità e statistica sono strumenti precisi, che ci permettono di rispondere in modo attendibile a domande precise. Senza di esse non avremmo l’efficacia della medicina moderna, la meccanica quantistica, le previsioni del tempo, la sociologia… Anzi, non avremmo l’intera scienza sperimentale, dalla chimica all’astronomia. Senza la statistica avremmo idee molto più vaghe su come funzionano gli atomi, le nostre società e le galassie. È stata la statistica, solo per fare un esempio, a permetterci di comprendere che fumare fa male e l’amianto uccide."
