Short Curriculum

Maria Castiglioni is Associate Professor in Demography at the University of Padova since 2002.

After her degree in Statistics (1984), she won a scholarship at IRP (National Institute for Population Research) in Rome. During 1988-90 she studied for PhD in Demography at the University of Florence. She worked as junior researcher in the Regional Administration of Veneto (1985-1991). In 1992-2002 she worked as Researcher at the university of Padova.

Her main research field is marital and reproductive behaviour in Italy and in developing countries, using several quantitative statistical and demographic methods. These studies have been carried out within many national research projects such as the Second Family and Fertility Survey in Italy, studies on values, choices and constraints in reproductive behaviours, on sexual behaviours, on wellbeing of children, on the new fertility regime in Italy, on Large Families in Italy. She participated into the international project “FamiliesAndSocieties – Changing families and sustainable societies: Policy contexts and diversity over the life course and across generations” funded by the European Commission 7th Framework Programme – Cooperation (http://www.familiesandsocieties.eu/ )

Recently she has studied intergenerational exchanges within family networks, both concerning old people and parents and children when they form their first union, and residential proximity among relatives.

Further research has been directed to the use of official statistics, starting from research at IRP on reconstruction of Italian population by sex, age and marital status in 1952-81, up to the participation in the working group on birth official statistics, for the Italian Commission on Statistical Data of the Prime Minister Office.

She is a member of the Italian Statistical Society (SIS), of the Italian Association for Population Studies (AISP), of the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS), of the International Union of the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP).
